Ever since I’ve started my most recent academic studies, I’ve had a drastically reduced amount of time available for my various non-study related things (work, dance, socialising, etc). As part of that I gave up bellydance teaching, I have seen my friends a lot less and have not really had the time to keep the Edinburgh Bellydance Calendar up to date. Given that it’s a bit of a ghost site, I’ve removed the link for it from my blog and website now, as the more sharp-eyed of you may have noticed.

Proving that nature abhors a vacuum, the wonderfully enthusiastic (and generally wonderful) Pheonyx Dance created a facebook group and now a new website, Bellydancing Buddies, and a new online google calendar, as a repository for information about what bellydance classes and events are on throughout Scotland. I fully encourage you to get your classes and events listed there.

Well done Pheonyx, and thank you!

Hello lovely readers,

I have now done a big update of the Edinburgh Bellydance Calendar with all of the Autumn belly dance classes that I know about!  If you know of any classes that I’ve missed please let me know – shelley.dancing@gmail.com – and I’ll see about getting them added.

Broken down by style we have:

EDIT:  I’ve since been told about Egyptian style bellydance classes being held at the St Bride’s Community Centre on Monday evenings taught by Lara Yadgarian, though I’m not sure what type of Egyptian that is (modern or classic).  More info here.

EDIT: I’ve since been told about bellydance classes offered by Constantina at Leith Academy on Thursday evenings.  I’m not sure how she classifies her style so have not added it to the above list.  More info here.

Enjoy!

Oh, and if you want to join me in hosting the calendar do get in touch.  It’s a straightforward bit of code I can give you to cut and paste into your website.

PS – I almost called this the “Fall”  Term – being here in America makes their expressions very infectious!

As part of the festival of Middle Eastern Spirituality and Peace that Neill Walker is organising in Edinburgh, there are a few events coming up that will feature live bellydancers.

The first is a concert, on this Saturday (Feb 6th), is a fund-raiser for the festival.  It costs £12/£10 (concessions) and is on in the Roxy Art House, doors at 6pm.  Full details, including where to get tickets can be found here.  Performing at this are local bellydancers, Constantina and Sheikha.

Here’s the most recent clip of Constantina’s dancing I can find (I can’t find any for Sheikha):

The next event is a ‘Safa’ which is a Turkish word meaning “party / entertainment / pleasure”. This one is on on Wednesday the 24th of February at Empires Cafe on 24 St Mary’s Street.  The dancers aren’t named as of yet, there’s more information about the event here (though you need to scroll down).

After this is a concert by (the only) local Turkish band, Joombush/Cümbüş on Sunday the 28th of February.  It costs £10/£8 (concessions) and is on at the St. Bride’s Centre on Dalry Road. More details can be found on the facebook event listing here.  Performing at this are local bellydancers Kardelen, Tigerlily and the group Paravana (comprised of Raquel Alvarez and Jeanette Hunter).  Aside from Tigerlily’s video’s (and I’ve already posted some of those in earlier blog posts here and here) I can’t find any of Kardelen or Paravana.  I can’t find any public photos of them either.

You can find details of all these events in the Edinburgh Bellydance Calendar and if you know of any other local live bellydancing performance events please tell me and I’ll add them in!

It seems like we’re entering hafla season! Thursday just past was the Edinburgh University’s hafla and now Caroline Rose tells me that she’ll be having a hafla in the Pleasance Cabaret Bar on Feb 27th – which, I think, would be a fabulous end to a day of workshops thatI’m throwing as part of Festival of the Middle Eastern Spirituality and Peace (there are more details and the ability to book my workshops on my website and there is, of course, info on the Edinburgh Bellydance Calendar – see links at the top of the blog page).  I’ll add more details to this on Caroline’s hafla when I have them.

[EDIT 2/2/10: I’ve heard on the grapevine that Caroline might be shifting the date of this hafla to March. Will update when I know more.]

AND… the weekend after that there’s a hafla at the Inchture Hotel in Perthshire on March 6th.  There’s event details on facebook here and a facebook group for the hafla here and it has it’s own website here!  This hafla raises money for Talking2Minds  (http://www.talking2minds.co.uk) a charity that works with people who have Post Traumatic Stress disorder.  Tickets cost £8.

And for your viewing pleasure here are some videos from the University hafla last week:

Given the responses I received to the idea I floated of putting together an online calendar of events for the bellydance community in Edinburgh, I’ve gone ahead with it. You’ll see a shiny new link at the top of this blog called “Edinburgh Bellydance Calendar“. If you click on it the link takes you to the calendar, which is hosted on my own website.

I currently have classes, workshops, etc run by myselfHabiba Dance, Edinburgh University, Hilary Thacker and Caroline Evans.  If you would like your event(s) included please send me the details.

Also, if you want to embed this calendar on your site as well please let me know and I’ll send you the little bit of html you need to do so.  As it’s a Google calendar I’m using you don’t need to do any maintenance on this, it’ll all be maintained by me updating the Google calendar.
